Reception Work Week commencing 4th May

Date: 29th Apr 2020 @ 10:29am

Week Beginning 4.5.20

Miss Larkins’ group is now GIRAFFES
Mr Walker’s group is now TIGERS
Mrs Thomas’ group is now ELEPHANTS

Remember to write about your Naughty Bus antics!

If you cannot print out the cards or worksheets for phonics, then have a look at them and do something similar or look at other phonics activities online with the sound of the day.

Challenge of the week
For an extra challenge – Parents may wish to get involved with this…(Mrs Thom's daughter had this challenge from her university friends and we all got involved!)
The challenge is: The furthest distance you can throw a teabag into a mug. Think outside the box.  Video your attempt (it can be a family one or individual) and send it to Mrs Thomas.  Tell me who it is doing the throwing on the best throw (name of adult or child), send in the video and tell me the length thrown. I will announce the winner at the end of the week! Feel free to put it on the school Facebook page too!

Monday  Before you start HIDE THE NAUGHTY BUS!!!!

PE - Kids Daily Workout live at 9am

Phonics-
GIRAFFES – practise cvc words and writing them down hearing all the sounds you can. Practise writing phase 2 tricky words – I the no go to.  Play games on Phonics Play.
TIGERS - Practise quick writing the tricky words – was will with
ELEPHANTS – Practise quick writing the tricky words – my for too
ELEPHANTS & TIGERS -  today’s sound is – ar Look at the cards and match them to the correct picture. Look around the house for things that contain the ar digraph. Complete the ar worksheet.

Literacy HIDE THE NAUGHTY BUS!!!!

Don’t let your child know where the bus is hidden.  Show him the postcard that we have sent a photo of telling him that the teachers have received this from the Naughty Bus.  Where is he?  Can they recognise the pictures on the postcard?

 Yes, it’s London!
Can your child write a reply to the Naughty Bus telling him that they miss him and want him to come back? You can write this in your books or use the postcard template. Make sure the Naughty Bus comes back tomorrow! (You will only need to use the first page of this document.)

Maths

We are continuing to look at and recognise different coins this week, we would like you to have a look at the Coin Hunt Sheet.  Ask an adult to hide lots of different coins around the house or the garden for you and then get someone to time you searching for the coins.  As you search, you can tick off how many you find.  If you are playing this against someone else, don’t collect the coins up as you go along – if you’re not, then this might be a good idea!
When your time is up, count how many ticks you have got on your sheet and write down how many you found.  If you wanted to stretch yourself, you could try to write down the total amount instead of the number of coins….

Topic

Can you draw/paint/create/craft a mode of transport and then label the different parts of it?  It doesn’t have to be a bus, it could be any mode of transport.  I think I would do a helicopter today and then I would look on the internet at the names of the different parts.  You could create a little book and do a different mode of transport each day…  Think outside the box…Are feet a mode of transport?  Is an elephant?

Tuesday
PE - Kids Daily Workout live at 9am

Phonics-
GIRAFFES – practise cvc words and writing them down hearing all the sounds you can. Write the sentence: It is a mum. Play spelling games on Espresso.
TIGERS - Practise quick writing the tricky words – was will with
ELEPHANTS – Practise quick writing the tricky words – my for too
ELEPHANTS & TIGERS -  today’s sound is – ow. Look at the cards and match them to the correct picture. Look around the house for things that contain the ow digraph. Complete the ow worksheet.   Play spelling games on Espresso.

Literacy

Today we would normally be having a visit from the Police.  We have a super Police Officer parent who has continued to come back into school years after his children have been through EYFS! Anyway, we would like you to think about what you know about the police. How do they help us? What do they drive?  (It’s more than just a police car…) Why do they wear uniforms?  What is a fingerprint?
Think about and research these things online with a parents and then write some sentences about it.  You can choose how to present your findings and then send them into us so we can have a look at what you found out. Have a look at these espresso links:
Who are the Police? Play Police Snap Images of the police and How do the Police help us?

Log in to Purple Mash - click here to take a photo of yourself as a police officer!

PE and Maths - Target practice

Today, we would like you to aim and throw at something.  You can try throwing balls into a bucket or be creative and just use what is around your house, such as crumpled up socks!  We suggest going outside to throw as we know we are not allowed to throw things inside!
See if you can throw something into the bucket, hoops, chalk circle (or other shape) on the ground. Perhaps you could give each area a score? Or measure the distance thrown. Play against your siblings or parents.  See who can score the highest. Will the person with the lowest score have to help with making tea….?

Topic
Can you draw/paint/create/craft a mode of transport and then label the different parts of it?  It doesn’t have to be a bus, it could be any mode of transport.  I think I would do a fork lift truck today and then I would look on the internet at the names of the different parts.  You could create a little book and do a different mode of transport each day…  Think outside the box…Are feet a mode of transport?  Is an elephant?

Wednesday
PE - Kids Daily Workout live at 9am

TIGERS - Practise quick writing the tricky words – was will with
ELEPHANTS – Practise quick writing the tricky words – my for too
ELEPHANTS & TIGERS -  today’s sound is – or Look at the cards and match them to the correct picture. Look around the house for things that contain the or digraph. Complete the or worksheet.

Literacy
Today we would normally be having a visit from the Fire Brigade.  One of our former governors used to be a fire fighter and he visited every year.  He has since retired, but Macclesfield Fire Service always send us a fire engine and crew to show us around and tell us what they do. Anyway, we would like you to think about what you know about the fire brigade.  How do they help us? What do they drive?  Why do they wear uniforms?  Do they just put out fires? What else do they do?
Think about and research these things online with a parents and then write some sentences about it.  You can choose how to present your findings and then send them into us so we can have a look at what you found out.

Have a look at these espresso links: Firefighter videos, Play Firefighter PairsImages of the Fire Service and How to prevent fires?

Log in to Purple Mash - click here to take a photo of yourself as a firefighter!

Maths
Capacity.  Have a look at some containers and then outside, fill them, or half fill them with water.  Use the language of full, half full, empty.  Have a play with the water.  Which containers are the largest in capacity?  How do you know?  If it’s taller, will it hold more water? Why? Or why not?
If you wanted to (and if the weather is still gorgeous) you can pour a small amount of water onto your patio or pavement.  Then draw a line around the edges of the puddle you have made and then see how long it takes for the water to disappear.  What is it called when this happens to the water? You could try this with a big puddle, a medium puddle and a small blob of water.  Which dries up the fastest and why?
If you are allowed, and if you have a hose pipe, why not see how far you can squirt it like a fire fighter does?  You could aim at something.  You could use a tape measure and measure the distance you managed to reach…

Topic
Draw draw/paint/create/craft a mode of transport and then label the different parts of it?  It doesn’t have to be a bus, it could be any mode of transport.  I think I would do a baby’s buggy today and then I would look on the internet at the names of the different parts.  You could create a little book and do a different mode of transport each day…  Think outside the box…Are feet a mode of transport?  Is an elephant?

Thursday
PE - Kids Daily Workout live at 9am

Phonics-
GIRAFFES – practise cvc words and writing them down hearing all the sounds you can. Can you write the sentence: I am a dad.
TIGERS - Practise quick writing the tricky words – was will with
ELEPHANTS – Practise quick writing the tricky words – my for too
ELEPHANTS & TIGERS -  today’s sound is – short ur - Look at the cards and match them to the correct picture. Look around the house for things that contain the ur digraph. Complete the ur worksheet.

Literacy

Superwrite document download here (or write on a page from your writing book and draw a picture).   Look at the picture.

Describe it verbally in sentences.  What can you see?  What is happening? What number is on the bus? Children to write their own sentences based on the picture without any adult help.  Afterwards, they can ‘fix it’ with an adult if they would like to.

Maths

Read the Finley Fish Capacity letter.
Add a little food colouring to a large tray of water to make the water easier to see and measure.
Read Finley Fish’s letter to the children. It explains that Finley needs to find a new place to live as he travels from place to place. He has found lots of different containers of various shapes and sizes but isn’t sure which one would hold the most water.
Provide the children with a variety of objects that Finley could use to travel in, for example: cups, bottles and boxes. Provide containers of different shapes and sizes (e.g. tall/narrow containers, short/fat containers, cuboids, cylinders).
Explain that we are going to help Finley to find out which container he should use. To do this we need to work out the capacity of each of the containers. Explain that the capacity is the amount it can hold. Finley needs to know which container can hold the most water.
Give the children the chance to explore all of the containers.
Ask them to describe the containers, encouraging them to use the correct mathematical vocabulary for their size and shape.
Ask them which of the containers they think would be the best one for Finley to use and why.
Show the children the coloured water (to make it easier to see) and ask them how they could use the water to find out the capacity of the containers.
Encourage the children to talk to a partner and share ideas about the how to work out which container has the largest capacity. Children then share their ideas with the group.
If the children generate a suitable method of working out which object has the largest capacity, follow their idea.

If the children do not generate an appropriate method, suggest using one of the smallest containers to fill the larger one with.
Key Questions:
How can we find out which container will hold the most water?
Can you predict which container will be the best container for Finley to use?
Which container do you think looks like it can hold the most?
Which container do you think will hold the least amount of water? Why do you think that?
What can you tell me about this container?
What shape is the container?
Is it narrow/wide/tall/short?
Which container is the narrowest/widest/tallest/shortest?
How many scoops of water do you think this container will hold?
Can you estimate/guess how many scoops of water this container will hold?
Do you think this container will hold more/less water?
Which container should we tell Finley to use? Why?
How do we know that is the best container for Finley?
Can we put the containers in order from the smallest container to the biggest?
What did you find out?

Fix It Time
All our children know that Friday afternoon is ALWAYS FIX IT FRIDAY, but today we will have a Fix It Thursday as it is Bank Holiday tomorrow!  Ask them, they will tell you!  This is when we don’t have anything organised for the children: we have things to fix.  If we have missed something through the week, or need to improve on something this is the time that we do it. Either have a rest, play or go back and complete something from the planning that you haven’t done.
And finally, to calm everything down, click here for Cosmic Kids Yoga

Remember to submit your teabag challenge video!
Have a great Bank Holiday Weekend and enjoy VE Day.  If you have any plans and want to decorate things for it, have a look on Twinkl as they have lots of printables; bunting etc.
